11th Bn R Irish Rifles was raised in Co Antrim in Sep 1914 from the Antrim Volunteers and allocated to the Ulster (later 36th) Division. After initial training in various camps in Ireland the division moved to Seaford in England in July 1915, and in early September it moved to Bramshott and Bordon for final preparations for the field, and it is at St Lucia Barracks, Bordon, where this short account of the 11th Battalion s war service begins, on 4th October 1915 when it moved to France. The story, which is compiled from the diary of Captain Samuels, supplemented by such records as he was able to obtain, closes with the advance of the Ulster Division on the Somme at Thiepval on 1st July 1916. At the end there is the embarkation nominal roll of officers and men, and the casualty list for 1st July. The portraits of the 23 officer casualties include brief service details.
