Corwen Gryneth, a knight in the service of Morwain, King of Ambria, is seriously wounded in a battle to help Morwain keep his crown. He takes leave from his duties and returns to his home, the estate of his older brother where he hopes to heal and rethink his life. On the way, he meets Cibrian, a wizard and Master of Ealdred Tower, not realizing this chance encounter will change his life and send him on a dangerous quest to rescue a child of high destiny from a sorcerer who wishes to rule over all the kingdoms.
